Mara Chrystie

Having been a community worker, teacher and primary school headteacher in London, I am now contributing to community arts project around Southend.

I co-ordinate a community group called ACEnetwork (Arts and Citizenship in Education). Our aim is to link communities through the arts and to challenge stereotypes and prejudice. We have brought workshops in African dance, drumming and cookery to local schools as well as mosaic courses. I work with schools and charities to raise funding, employ artists and project manage.

A recently formed group of five local mosaic artists is planning to share our love of mosaics with schools and communities. Community Mosaics East will undertake work with individual commissions as well as groups.

I love the feel and texture of mosaics. I use a range of materials- from plates bought at car boot sales, shells and pebbles found at the beach to luxurious marble and gold. I enjoy working in schools and communities, the fun and excitement of bringing people together to create a unique work of art.
