Jill Poet

Jill Poet - Founding MemberI have lived and worked in the Southend-on-Sea borough for over 30 years. My profession is accountancy and I have been a Member of the Association of Accounting Technicians since 1983. I hasten to add my role within CrEsCo is not as a ‘creative accountant!’

My career has been extremely varied. I have always been a ‘hands on’ accountant, preferring to work within small companies and be an active part of the management team. I have spent many years in the leisure industry and my roles have included financial controller / manager of Courtlands Health & Fitness Centre in Thorpe Bay (now LA Fitness); project manager for Route 66 in Southend and also the larger Route in Colchester.

Accountancy is now only a very small part of the work I do. My passion is encouraging people to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing – that is wellbeing in its widest possible sense which incorporates our relationship with the environment. My main business, a joint project with my partner Mike Wilson, is our social enterprise web site www.HealthyLifeEssex.co.uk.

Mission Statement

To provide a web resource that will encourage the public to make lifestyle and everyday behaviour shifts that will enhance their health and wellbeing, improve their enjoyment of the local environment, and increase awareness of sustainability issues. To achieve this we will establish strong and lasting relationships with our stakeholders.

Creativity is a very important aspect of Healthy Life Essex. It is a big project and we need to capture not only the interest of the public, but that of a multitude of other organisations and individuals – both governmental and non-governmental - that have traditionally paid lip service to working together but have very rarely actually done so. Throughout the county there are people with common goals and yet they continually work in communication silos. This is neither a cost effective nor efficient way to reach the public. The role of our web site is to act as a conduit, bringing together information on a whole range of subjects including holistic therapies, exercise & fitness, nutrition, health issues, spirituality, charities, countryside, wildlife, gardening, sustainability, volunteering and more!

Why am I a member of CrEsCo you might ask? That is quite simple. As an organisation, we are all passionate about Southend and our region - the East of England. Our dynamic and eclectic consortium is determined to make a difference through culture, arts, creativity and entrepreneurship. This can have a hugely beneficial impact in two ways:

1. creating a more vibrant and pleasant living environment;
2. providing greater opportunity for public involvement in community arts projects.

Both living in a better environment and actively engaging in community arts projects have been proven to dramatically increase health and wellbeing. This includes reducing crime and poverty thereby aiding the economic development of a region.

CrEsCo and Healthy Life Essex will therefore continue to work synergistically to improve the health and wellbeing of our community.
